OUR HISTORY

WORLD CLASS BESPOKE ELECTRICALS

Air and Sound, a family business, was founded in 1984 by John Conway. John's vision was to build a company that could offer the best car audio installations. John invited his brother Gerry, an electronics specialist, to help get the company off the ground. Air and Sound opened and began installing aftermarket radios into vehicles. Within 3 years the company had outgrown its first premises and moved into a bigger unit. Air and Sound went from installing simple cassette players, to building custom sound systems replacing all OEM speakers with upgraded aftermarket units. Aftermarket subwoofers, amplifiers and CD players were being fitted into every vehicle rolled into the workshop.

Clarion had heard of all the hype surrounding Air and Sound's audio builds and so invited us to build a demo car for them (the first of many). Our first demo car for Clarion was an Alfa Romeo SZ. This was a limited edition model with only 1036 built. Air and Sound was the first company in the UK to work on one, with the exception of Alfa Romeo themselves. The build was a full audio installation including a headunit, 8 speakers, subwoofer and 2 amps. The car was a huge accomplishment and as a result was unveiled at the UK Motorshow in 1991.

Following on from the Alfa Romeo's great success, Clarion issued a second build, this time a Mazda Xedos 9, with a fully customised boot build, over 300metres of cabling, 12 speakers, 2 subs, 2 amplifiers, false floor and lots of perspex. It was only a couple of weeks after the Mazda had been completed that Clarion wanted a new build, this time a Suzuki Jimny. This vehicle obtained the trademark Air and Sound quality audio build. Everything was fabricated in-house, from the custom wiring to sub boxes and perspex boot floors. The vehicle featured in many of the top motoring magazines at the time.

During the builds for Clarion, Air and Sound had been developing their own show car, a Range Rover Classic.  This vehicle was all about showing Air and Sound’s ability to install the best audio components into a vehicle in a stylish, dynamic and unique way, ensuring that the quality of sound is unbeatable and unprecedented. The Range Rover was one of the best in the country and featured on Big Breakfast and Top Gear.  It won first place at the Alpine Sound-Off Installation challenge. Because of the Range Rover’s success, John Conway was recognised for his contribution to the car audio business and thus, became a sound-off judge, judging vehicle's sound systems across the UK.

As technology evolved, so too did Air and Sound. We were one of the first companies in the UK to install a working multimedia system into a very rare Lexus Soarer. The Lexus had screens in the headrest, a single din fold out screen, Playstation 2, DVD player and a 12 disc changer. This was the beginning of In-Car Multimedia. This sparked a huge interest in the company, attracting anyone from young men with sport hatchbacks, to celebrities and their luxury vehicles.

With the introduction of multimedia to our In-Car Entertainment services, Clarion requested a new build, this time a Fiat Multipla. This car was the biggest and best to date. It featured over 20 speakers, 4 subwoofers, 4 amplifiers, 20inch television, 2 7inch televisions in the dash, 2 15 inch televisions built into the rears of the front seats, satellite navigation and a DVD player.

Today, Air and Sound continues to build some of the most unique In-Car Multimedia installs. There is no limit to the technology that Air and Sound can install into any vehicle, big or small. Our workshop is the birthplace to some of the biggest, wildest and most recognised car installations in the market today. If you love sound, if you love multimedia, if you love your car, Air and Sound are the ONLY place you should be visitng for your one-off custom install and electrical need
